    Rani Pokhari (meaning queen's pond, originally known as Nhu Pukhu meaning new pond, is a historic artificial pond located in the heart of Kathmandu.

    The square-shaped tank dates from the 17th century, and was built on the eastern side of the then city limits. It lies just outside a former city gate. The pond is one of Kathmandu's most famous landmarks, and is known for its religious and aesthetic significance. Its dimensions are 180m by 140m.

    The pond was constructed by King Pratap Malla to console her queen who was devastated after their son was trampled to death by an elephant. The historic pond and the temple at the middle of the pond were severally damaged by the earthquake that hit Nepal two years ago. The pond used to open for public for on Bhai Tika and Chhath festivals.

    But, after the temple was damaged by the quake, it has been closed ever since. The reconstruction of the pond has been started and the temple and other old infrastructures have been demolished. The pond has been dried up and the fishes have been shifted to Kamal Pokhari. The reconstruction works were started some 18 months ago but is going at snail's pace.

    The Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) that is looking after the reconstruction of the pond and the temple has made public a final design. The final design has been unveiled incorporating suggestions received from earlier designs.
    A total of Rs 100 million will be required to complete work as per the new design, according to the officials. They claimed that the historic pond will get new look as per the design within a year.a
